The Goals of ASET

Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation has two primary goals. One is to increase truck safety by raising the allowable truck weight to a 97,000 pound limit on a three axle trailer set as federal maximum. This would allow states the flexibility to set weights on existing trucks up to 97,000 pounds with the addition of a sixth axle (third trailer axle). The second goal is to decrease the number of trucks on the road by advocating a single, safe expansion of an existing size configuration to more regions of the U.S. This size issue has yet to be determined but is currently being debated within the coalition.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Comprehensive Truck Size and Weight Study released on August 31, 2000, such a change in truck weights and a limited size expansion would lead to a decrease in vehicle miles traveled and increase safety on our nation's highways.
