What is ASET?

Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation is a nationwide broad-based coalition of shippers, motor carriers, manufacturers and related state and national organizations committed to delivering goods safely, efficiently and economically.

ASET supports equipment configurations and overall transportation policy that properly balance American industry's need for economic and efficient transportation with protection of the public and the environment.

The Goals of ASET

Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation has one primary goals. That is to increase truck safety by raising the allowable truck weight limit to 97,000 pounds on a three axle trailer set as federal maximum. This would allow states the flexibility to set weights on existing trucks up to 97,000 pounds with the addition of a sixth axle (third trailer axle). This would lead to fewer trucks being utilized to haul the same amount of freight. While this truck weight increase in the only primary goal of ASET, the coalition is committed to working with shippers and carriers to support those that wish to safely allow limited use of longer-combination-vehicles (LCVs) where necessary. All industries must work in a collaborative effort to decrease congestion, help to mitigate our rising driver shortage problem and diesel fuel crisis, and to improve the safety or our highways.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Comprehensive Truck Size and Weight Study released in 2000, as well as the Transportation Research Board's Study released in 2003, such a change in truck weights and a limited size expansion would lead to a decrease in vehicle miles traveled and increase safety on our nation's highways.
