to Lead" Williams succeeds McQuaid as co-chairman of Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation Americans for Safe and Efficient Transportation, a coalition of shippers, carriers and others in favor of heavier trucks, has named Maverick Transportation President and Founder Steve Williams as co-chairman for 2001. Williams has been on the ASET executive committee for more than a year and has been active in the group's legislative efforts to increase size and weight limits on some highways. Williams joins Mike Regan of Tranzact Technologies as ASET's industry leaders and chief spokesmen. Williams replaces outgoing co-chairman John A. McQuaid, the former CEO of the National Private Truck Council. A privately held logistics and transportation company headquartered in Little Rock, Ark., Maverick operates about 700 trucks, mainly in the flatbed sector. ASET is working on building a broad-based coalition and Williams' inclusion is seen as bringing credibility and industry respect to the group. "I am excited about assuming this leadership role with ASET," Williams said. "Finding safe ways to improve productivity on our nation's highways that benefits both shippers and carriers will ultimately benefit our economy. I am anxious to build on ASET's past success as we move toward passage of our safety and productivity legislation." Bills to expand longer and heavier trucks have died in the past two sessions of Congress. But ASET vows to reintroduce that legislation in the opening weeks of the 107th Congress with bipartisan support, the group said. By John D. Schulz
